Friendship Commanders' Fall tour starts tomorrow, 9/17!

Hi pals!

It’s me, the person who’s always heading out on some tour or another, and who’s somehow steadily in the middle of writing too many things at the same time! What’s going on with you?

But seriously, I’m happy to be hitting the Western side of the country over the next few weeks! Friendship Commanders are doing an eight-show run with our label mates, Witch Ripper, including RippleFest Texas; then we’re doing a string of West Coast dates on our own. Should rip. Be sure to check the dates below, as a few have been added since I last wrote to you!

Later in the season, we have a show in Tolono, IL on October 16th, plus Wisconsin Doomed & Stoned in Green Bay on October 17th, and Wendigo Doom Fest in Knoxville on Halloween!

I’m working on booking some solo shows, the songwriting for both of my projects is going well, and I guess I’m writing a third book right now. I’m starting to see it all take shape. Where there once were only shards, there are now complete pieces, enough to follow down the road. Stay tuned for news on all of the above. It’s coming!

Running out the door to begin Friendship Commanders’ August tour dates right now! The first show of our run with Crop is tonight, August 7th, in Lexington, KY! We have eight shows with them throughout the Midwest and East Coast; can’t wait!

We’ve also announced a September tour with our Magnetic Eye Records label mates, Witch Ripper, which will take us out West; we have some West Coast dates on our own, as well. Finally, we’re playing Wisconsin Doomed & Stoned in Green Bay on October 17th, and Wendigo Doom Fest in Knoxville on Halloween! All of our dates are below.

Today is also Bandcamp Friday, a great day to support independent artists, especially during this time of music and art being devalued at every turn. The reality of AI and its war on genuine creativity and creative problem-solving is upon us (I made a formal post about it on Instagram earlier this week, if you’re interested). Hey pals!

It’s peach season here in Nashville. Lightning bugs, cherries, and Tennessee’s trademark microwave heat have been the backdrop to my summer so far. Plus, writing. More on that in a minute! Let’s get through the imminent happenings.

The first bit of news is that Friendship Commanders’ summer tour dates start this weekend in Louisville, KY! We’re hitting Mag Bar Music Fest tomorrow, the 18th, and then we head out for a run of shows with our buds in Crop on August 7th. Should be fun! All dates are at the bottom of this message; come out and see us if we’re traveling your way! Also, if you order vinyl from us (standalone copies of BEAR excluded) during the month of July, we’ll include a copy of our second album, BILL! It’s our way of honoring our late friend Steve Albini, who was born on July 22nd. We made the record with him!

Speaking of anniversaries, Wednesday marked one year since the release of KEEPING SCORE / MELT, the lead dual single from the current FC album, BEAR, a project I wrote about being outside of womanhood. I thought to myself, let me make a quick video about writing KEEPING SCORE to mark the occasion! Famous last words. There was nothing quick about it. I made one, and it exists quite awkwardly on the FC socials, but it felt like it took about three hundred years to do it, and even still, I’m not sure it nailed the point. And what is the point? That I wrote KEEPING SCORE after a lifetime of watching women coddle/favor/praise boys and cis men, at the expense of girls and other women. Ad nauseam. All around me. While wearing feminist t-shirts. It was difficult to capture all of that in a one-minute video (mine was two minutes).

Video and social media flails aside, I’m enormously proud of KEEPING SCORE. I’m super proud of MELT, too, but KEEPING SCORE hits bone for me. It has since the day I wrote it. I deeply appreciate all who have connected with it and the rest of the tracks on BEAR!

One of the reasons I’m having a hard time with anything that takes less than a minute to consume is that I’m deep in the trenches of something that is taking most of my time to express. As I mentioned in my previous letter, I began writing after the European tour. It started as work I was doing just for me, to chronicle the tour, but maybe also for some other reason I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Now that I’m up to my eyeballs in it, I see what it is. It’s me exploring: what is feminism? And does it still exist? I don’t mean the marches and slogans and swag left over from other times. No, I mean the actual belief system. And if it does, is there a version we can agree on, or even work with temporarily? Furthermore: where do I land in it? Stay tuned for my thrilling findings (maybe)!

I’ve also been writing some new music for both of my projects, which is always a relief. It’s not that I ever fear I’ve run out of music, but when the new songs do show themselves, I’m reminded that I’m more than however this moment feels. My interior and exterior worlds expand. New songs are lighthouses on any given stretch of sea.

Okay, that’s all of it for now! Wait, one more thing: should I start a Substack? And if so, would you subscribe? It would be about songwriting and music. I’m rolling the idea around in my head, and whether I can manage a posting schedule. Let me know what you think!

Summer tour dates & festivals for Friendship Commanders!

Pals!

We're home from Europe and mostly recovered from the tour, travel, and jet lag; we're certainly upright enough to tell you that we had a powerful time over those three and a half weeks! We ended up playing nineteen shows in twenty-three days, across six countries. We gave our very first encore in France, and did seven total on the run. An honor! We also debuted DRIPPING SILVER in a live setting and played it at fifteen of the shows. We ate incredible vegan fare, saw actual castles, met countless people, and in our estimation, had some of our best performances. Huge thanks to all who contributed to the tour's success!

Our Summer tour dates have been announced, many of which are with our friends, Crop! We're hitting Mag Bar Music Fest in Louisville on July 18th with them and many other comrades, and then we're co-headlining an eight-show run together in August! Excited to hit some cities we've somehow never played before. And then we're doing the Magnetic Eye Records showcase at Ripple Fest Texas in Austin on September 20th! Individual line-ups for both festivals have been released, and our dates rip pretty hard, if we do say so ourselves.

Friendship Commanders' first European tour starts this week, May 15th!

I’m living off of lists, bags within bags, and sheer adrenaline right now! I have fewer than twenty-four hours left in my house to prepare for three-and-a-half weeks in Europe with Friendship Commanders! In reality, the prep started months ago, as you know, but now I’m down to contact solution and small foam pieces to provide extra padding for the three guitars I’m flying over with. Wish me luck, but really wish them luck. See one of them, MARIAH, at the bottom of this message!

At a certain point, you have to hand it all over, literally and symbolically, and fly, right? I’m nearly at that point!

Friendship Commanders leave for their first European tour in 2 weeks!

Happy April!

I just finished assembling the world’s most concise pedal board in preparation for the upcoming Friendship Commanders tour! I needed something smaller that I could carry on the plane, but which would still make my guitars uncomfortably loud and fuzzy. Mission accomplished! See the final product below, all sixteen by eight inches of it; A FEAT. Still nailing down which guitars I’m taking, but two of the three are sorted. Getting closer! I’m starting to actually feel excited about what’s ahead, the prospect of playing so many stages we’ve never played before, in cities and countries we’ll be visiting for the first time.

Speaking of which: there are more shows! We’re now playing eighteen shows across six countries, starting in Mayen, Germany on May 15th! If we’re coming anywhere near you between then and June 6th, please join us at the shows! The last time I wrote to you, I was commemorating the first anniversary of my song, QUESTIONS FOR THE GODS OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR; this week, I’m celebrating the same for YELLOW, the second single released from ADULT CHILD. I’ve continued the live-at-home videos of those songs on my socials, if you’re interested in hearing a more stripped-down, solo presentation of the work. And here’s the cool official video for YELLOW I released one year ago! This one was a fun challenge.

This Friday, May 1st is a Bandcamp Friday, and I have all kinds of cool ADULT CHILD wares in my shop, as well as my other solo albums and books. And of course, there are many FC offerings! Friendship Commanders have two April shows + updated May-June EU dates!

Happy Spring, friends!

As I write this, I’m at my desk in Nashville facing my front yard tree, about which I wrote the first verse of the song FIRSTBORN from my album, ADULT CHILD. She was in bloom mid-month, for her one whole week of the year. I was so grateful to be in town for it! I hope something is flowering near you right now.

The early Spring tour dates Friendship Commanders did with Temptress were fantastic. Loud, full of life, and even involved me singing a song with Kelsey for a handful of shows.

Do you know how long it had been since I’d sung with another woman? Neither do I. But several years, in any event. It was nice!

I’ve been in a singing mood lately. We just passed the one year anniversary of QUESTIONS FOR THE GODS OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR being released as the lead single for ADULT CHILD. In the last ten days or so, I’ve been recording some live-at-home videos of those songs and sharing them on my socials. Lovely to revisit this project that was written, recorded, and released across various Spring seasons. Here’s the official vid for QFTGOHB, if you’ve never seen it! And if you missed my related essay for Atwood Magazine that was published around this time last year as part of their Women’s History Month series, enjoy!

In other singing news, Friendship Commanders have two April shows in the States: one this coming Saturday, April 4th, at TN Brew Works right here in Nashville, and one on April 10th at Reggie’s in Chicago. The Nashville show will likely be our only local event of the year, and the Chicago show lands on the six-month-iversary of our album BEAR being in the world! Will we do something zazzly to mark the occasion? Not sure! But knowing us, probably!

AND THEN WE’RE OFF TO EUROPE! Several new dates have been added to our May-June tour, and now we’re hitting six countries over the course of three weeks! I’m not ready at all, but I hope to be in the coming month. We leave on May 13th. I’ll probably write to you once more between now and then. Maybe I’ll have news about which guitars I’m taking over, because right now, I truly don’t know.

Friendship Commanders are heading to Europe this Spring! But first, the Southeast next month!

Hello and happy new year, friends!

While 2026 is off to an intense start at best, we're still looking forward to getting out and being loud in February and beyond! Our co-headlining tour dates with Temptress kick off on the 18th, and there has been one noteworthy change: February 25th will now find us in Miami as opposed to Jensen Beach, FL. Miami is Buick's hometown, and not only have we never played there, she's never played there. Momentous occasion! We've also added a Chicago show to our solo dates in April! We'll see you pals in one of our favorite cities on the 10th. 

AND THEN: Europe! Our first time! Thrilled to announce our May-June dates, starting in the Netherlands and ending in Luxembourg! Assorted shows in Germany, France, and Slovakia in between. We truly can't wait. We've been working toward this for what feels like an eternity. And finally, here we come!

In physical media news, we have all shirt sizes back in stock for our BEAR vinyl bundles on Bandcamp! The next Bandcamp Friday is February 6th, but it's always a good time to buy music from artists! Friends!

A loving note of appreciation for your solidarity and support in 2025, a massive year of output for me—maybe the biggest of my life so far. Across my projects, I released two albums, put forth eleven singles with videos, published three essays, toured on both records, started shooting with 35mm film again, and read exactly half of one book. Some years hold more than others, and this one was about as full as they get over here. Thank you for receiving it!

Someone recently asked me if I think being a songwriter is selfish. I said, all art is communication. It’s two pieces: expression and reception. We don’t make work for ourselves alone. We make work to tell, to be known, and to know in return. Many people have made me feel known through their responses to my music this year, and I feel like I know something about them as a result. I am incredibly grateful for this symbiosis, to have the opportunity to connect. As I said in ONE-STEP CLOSE-UP on my ADULT CHILD album:

I’ve been light, I’ve been sound // just trying to capture it all.

And that’s true. That’s all I’m doing here. Thank you.

The first tour dates of 2026 have already been announced for Friendship Commanders, and they’re listed below; I’ll be playing Buick Audra shows as well! There will be announcements, emails, new songs, new everything. But for now, I’m content and thoughtful. I hope your year held whatever you wanted it to, and I hope we get to see each other in 2026!

I’m freshly home from a fantastic November run with Friendship Commanders, I’ve done my laundry (twice!), and I’m ready to send off this beautiful year of creative output and community with a bang! Today, December 5th, is the last Bandcamp Friday of 2025 and I’m stocked up in both of my projects! If you’d like to give the give the gift of music, whether my solo work or Friendship Commanders, I’ve got you covered. I’ll even gift wrap the items for you if you shoot me a note when you purchase! I have physical copies of my new solo album, ADULT CHILD, as well as the Lyrics & Lists notebooks that each have forty pages for your own creative work, and even some shirts and copies of my memoirs! In the other camp, we have gorgeous transparent marbled green vinyl copies of the new Friendship Commanders LP, BEAR, as well as shirts and all kinds of other fare!
